OK, before I go any further, I guess I had better explain the name of this website. The short explanation is that it was inspired by a quote attributed to Rudyard Kipling, "The first condition of understanding a foreign country is to smell it." It captures my love of travel, as well as multiple interpretations of the word smelling - the wonderful aroma of local cuisine wafting from the kitchen of a small café, the earthy scent of the natural environment, the sometimes not-so-pleasant odor of the manmade environment, and the metaphorical "sniffing out" of new experiences. Smelling the Road was born!
That being said, my plans for this site are two-fold. When I am actually traveling, I want to record my adventures on the road, hopefully in the form of anecdotes that will give a sense of the experience and the place. I love photography, so I will be sure to include pictures to go with the words. When I am not traveling, I hope to share many things cultural - food, art, music, and celebrations. I would like to highlight the plethora of great local culture in my area.
